Information for Matchmakers
Initially, free membership privileges will be extended to matchmakers (Shadchanim, in Yiddish) as well as singles. Participating matchmakers will be encouraged to list their biographical data, range of matchmaking experience, religious and philosophical orientations, specialties and goals. Initially, these “advertisements” will be offered for free also. See the two sample matchmaker “advertisements” below.
My name is Mrs. Sarah Shadchan. I have been working as a volunteer in the field of Jewish matchmaking since 1976 and have been responsible for 16 marriages. Perhaps I could be described as a “generalist” because I try to help Jewish singles from all across the spectrum of religious observance – non-affiliated to strictly orthodox, called “Chareidi,” in Hebrew. I am personally observant and live near Philadelphia with my husband and five children aged 11 through 27. I earn my livelihood as a teacher and I take phone calls Monday through Thursday from 8 PM to 10 PM. Currently, I have about 80 candidates in my file. I look forward to hearing from you. A copy of my rabbi’s letter of recommendation appears below.

To Whom It May Concern:
I have known Mrs. Sarah Shadchan since I became the rabbi of her congregation in 1992. She and her husband are active members of our Beth Jacob Synagogue. I have been consistently impressed with Mrs. Shadchan’s dedication to helping our Jewish brothers and sisters. An unmarried cousin of mine was Mrs. Shadchan’s client and was fixed up with several appropriate people. This cousin is now engaged to a friend of the person that Mrs. Shadchan introduced. I endorse the matchmaking activities of Mrs. Sarah Shadchan.

I am Harold Weinstein and I am a professional matchmaker with the specialty of helping Jewish people with physical and/or mental disabilities. I have a master’s degree in social work and now work as assistant director of a Jewish Community Center/YMHA. My philosophy is that singles should be flexible in their pursuit of a “perfect spouse.” Many Jewish people, including some of my satisfied clients, are happily married to persons that they would have rejected on the basis of description alone. If you become my client, I will expect you to meet some “candidates” who you might not consider to be in a highly preferred spouse category. I will ask you to trust me because I will not to introduce you to persons who are totally unrealistic candidates.
Leave a message on my office answering machine and I will call you back in the evening.
I charge for my services. A client pays $100 at the time of the personal or telephone interview and an additional $900 at the wedding, if I introduced the couple.

To Whom It May Concern:
I am a rabbi and a member of the Sunny City, CA Jewish Community Center. Several of my congregants have attended singles activities created and managed by Mr. Harold Weinstein. They are effusive and of one mind about the interpersonal skills,
matchmaking skills and caring of Mr. Weinstein. Harold has also been my dear neighbor and friend for the last five years. I recommend that all Jewish singles particularly those with the challenges of physical and mental disabilities contact Mr. Weinstein so that he can help them find their “Beshert” (Hebrew for soulmate).

Further, every October and May, Dr. Miller arranges an absolutely free “Shidduch Fair” in Baltimore, Maryland for Sabbath Observant singles. At this event, singles interview with interested matchmakers, provide each matchmaker with a filled out resume form like the cHupaHelper form with a recent photo attached. Matchmakers from outside the Baltimore area are especially encouraged to attend. The marriage of Larry (Philadelphia) to Sally (Baltimore & San Antonio) resulted from the matchmaking of Mrs. W and Mrs. S (both from Silver Spring, MD) which was facilitated by Shidduch Fair 2.
